Before commencing the journey I am in dire need of a book fitting the following qualifications:
1000 pages plus
paperback
fun enough to keep me from jumping out of the window of some shitty bus after hour 19 of journey which may only have transported us 20 miles away from starting point but which did include two blown tires and maybe an average of nine screaming babies plus some chickens on my lap.
Ideas please.

North and South (John Jakes). Not quite 1000 pages, but it comes close. And if you get all three in the trilogy, you'll be busy forever.
A less chunky volume, but with dense writing (so it will take you a long time to get through) is by Janny Wurtz: The Curse of the Mistwraith of the Wars of Light and Shadow series. Fantasy at it's best.
underworld by don delillo. obv.
you know i don't read. just making it through your blog posts is quite an achievement for me.
have you thought about taking one of those e-book readers. Like the Sony one.
It's light. The batteries last forever. And you can download a whole library before you leave.
Save your back. Save some money. And have something to talk about everywhere you go.
Plus save you the tyranny of a 1000 page plus rule
Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up deciding on Vikram Seth: A suitable boy which is according to wikipedia "The longest conventional novel in English since Clarissa, and officially the longest novel in the English language published in a single volume (1488 pages). "
And because the backpack is alreayd filled with gadgets and chargers I stayed away from the e-book...next trip
